Cyanos Activity August 1, 2017
Water is clean for recreation.

Water
clarity at both the Center Lake and North Bay increased by 0.2-0.4 meters
(about 1 foot). Water clarity was very
similar throughout the lake (11 stations visited) varying between 2.1 and 2.6
meters. Cyanobacteria numbers increased
to 11K at Center Lake and 9.5K at North Bay.
Similarity between the two stations suggesting that cyanobacteria
numbers were probably equally distributed around the lake. The increase in cyanobacteria was accompanied
by lake-wide increases in dissolved oxygen to super-saturated levels of between
120% and 136%. Dissolved oxygen
concentration went from between 6.5 mg/L and 7.4 mg/L on July 27th,
to between 9.3 mg/L and 10.5 mg/L on August 1st, indicative of high rates of phytoplankton
photosynthesis, essentially back to levels seen pre-copper treatment.
Water
temperatures were warmest recorded so far this year ranging from 26.3 to 28.6 oC. Warm water extends nearly to the bottom with
9 of 11 stations having bottom water >22 oC. There are now only gradual decreases in
temperature with depth to the bottom indicating the lake is only very weakly
stratified if at all.
Water at 5.5 meters was anoxic at 4 of 5 stations
with that depth. Water at 5 meters was
anoxic at only 1 station (1 of 7). Water at 4.5 meters was anoxic at only 1
station out of 9 with that depth. Water
at 4 meters was between 42% and 80% saturated at all stations (11).
